1947 Studebaker M16 Truck
1947 Studebaker M16 1 ½ Ton Flat Bed Truck. One owner with 39,000 original miles. This truck was purchased new in 1947 to be used as a hay hauler for a ranching operation in Templeton, California. The truck was sent to C&C Welding of Compton, California where a 16X8 foot diamond plate all steel bed was installed. The frame was reinforced from shackle to shackle on the side and bottom. The bed also features a full length headache rack and lots of under bed tie down hooks. The truck was ordered with the “Big Six” Studebaker 226 cubic inch engine developing 94 horse power, Borg Warner T9 four speed manual truck transmission capable of handling 180 foot pounds of torque with 6.4 to 1 first gear(granny low), 3.09:1 second, 1.69:1 third and 1:1 forth gears. A Timken Model 53625 Two Speed rear axle with 8.22 low range and 5.64 high range gear ratios. Since this is a late serial number truck (19771) it has the bigger front axle and bearings and the heavy duty suspension featuring Delco Lovejoy shock absorber upgrades. Large drum brakes measuring 14 inch diameter X 2 inch width shoes in front and 14 1/8 inch diameter X 3 inch width shoes in back with a frame mounted hydrovac unit. The cab is in good shape with minimal rust and some damaged areas. The bed is of course in good shape with just surface rust. The truck has been sitting under a cover since 1983. The engine does not run and has a large hole in the oil pan indicating the truck ran over something that punctured the oil pan. When the oil ran out the engine seized. The head has been removed but is sitting on the bed of the truck and is in useable shape. It appears that all the parts are there with the exception of the head bolts and manifold bolts. I have available for a minimal cost a running used engine that could be used to replace the engine in the truck if you wanted to keep it stock.
My original plan was to convert this truck into a car hauler for my custom cars but health issues force the sale before I can begin the project. I planned for a late model diesel engine and modern overdrive automatic transmission. With the two speed rear axle it will make for a great car hauler set up. The brakes are huge and with the hydrovac unit it should stop with no problems. I planned to dove tail the rear of the bed behind the spring shackles and possibly extend the bed a few feet. Add a winch and tie downs and paint to suit. After some minor body work on the cab and fenders the plan was to keep the red cab with black fenders and running boards for that nostalgic look. The cab still has the cab operated turn signal arm bracket attached as well as the adjustable long arm truck mirrors. The wheels are 20 inch with 5 bolt pattern so you can keep the wheels or install aluminum units. I have two good used 8.25 X 20 tires with liners and new tubes that will go with the truck. I also have the factory service manual which will come in handy. Compared to most this truck needs very little work to make it road ready and with paint it will look great too.
I hate having to sell this truck as it is a dream project I have wanted to do for years and I looked a long time for this perfect platform. So my loss is your opportunity. If you follow the market you know these trucks fixed up are selling for crazy prices, so even if you don’t plan to keep it, for some sweat equity and minimal expense you can turn a handsome profit. I decided to have some fun to ease the pain of having to sell it so I am putting it on Ebay at auction with a low reserve as I will not just give it away. If you have any questions please ask BEFORE bidding. This truck is located five miles inland of highway 101 in Templeton, California at the original ranch at this time. So plan accordingly for hauling it to where you live. I can assist with the loading for transport but all costs associated with transporting are the buyers responsibility. Since it is old it of course comes with no warranty or any guarantees as to condition of any mechanical components. A $500.00 deposit will be required after the auction ends and balance will need to be paid with 3 days of end of auction. Vehicle can be stored for 30 days after payment in full if necessary. Good Luck and Happy Bidding.
